There are many reasons why people decide to embark upon their own Reiki journey. Perhaps they are motivated by the desire to help a relative, pet, friend or partner who is ill or in need; to work on personal issues; a therapist wishing to add it to their range of therapies or simply the desire to learn after experiencing the benefits of Reiki themselves – which is exactly the way I came upon it. Whatever the reason, when the time is right Reiki will find you! “When the student is ready .. the teacher will appear”.
My own Reiki journey began when I was studying Holistics at Canterbury College. I was due to sit one of my final practical exams and had such a pain in my back from a slipped disc I could barely stand. I recall being in a circle of students and someone asked me if I was OK. I told her about my back and said I did not know how I was going to stand for an hour and give a massage because of the pain. She asked if she could give me some Reiki. I had never heard of it before and was more than a little sceptical but at that stage, I would have tried anything.
She sat behind me with her hands on the small of my back. I felt the most amazing heat through her hands. After about 10 minutes she took her hands away and it was as if the pain lifted away with her hands. I was pain-free and able to do the exam – even though I could hardly believe it had worked and actually spent the rest of the day waiting for the pain to return I was such a doubting Thomas!! When the pain still had not returned the next day I was converted!
During the weeks following this treatment, I did some research into Reiki, bought some books on the subject and finally decided this was something I needed to train in myself.
I have now been practising Reiki on myself on a daily basis, on friends and family and on my clients for 15 years with some pretty powerful results. I have also used Reiki to treat my own pets and other animals including cats, dogs and horses. In fact, some of my most amazing moments with Reiki have come from treating animals – which confirms to me that you do not have to have a “belief” that the treatment works in order for it to be effective.
Eight years ago I completed my Grand Master training but it is only recently that I decided to take the final step of my Reiki journey - Reiki Teacher Training. This is in part because I had been looking for a Reiki Teacher to undertake courses at Health and Harmony. I became frustrated that I could not find anyone that I fully resonated with and who was equally passionate about the Reiki values and guidelines that I have put in to practice since my training. Then I had a “lightbulb moment” – that I needed to complete that circle of training I started 15 years ago and teach the classes myself.
The wonderful thing about Reiki is that anyone can learn to do it. You do not need any pre-requisites, experience, healing gift of knowledge. It does not matter what age, gender, religion or nationality you are. Reiki training is completely inclusive and probably the easiest, quickest and most simple holistic healing method available to us.
In fact, Reiki does not require learning in the traditional sense because it is not knowledge-based – it is experience-based and we can only acquire the ability to channel Reiki by becoming “attuned” which is the process of being aligned with universal energy by a Reiki Master during training. Because we all have the innate capability to heal energetically, by becoming initiated in Reiki we are simply opening the door to what we are already capable of. Therefore, all you really need is the desire to learn, two days to take a Reiki Level One course and the willingness to let Reiki flow through your hands (to benefit yourself and others).
So, if the time is right for you to start your own Reiki journey I would love for you to join me on a Reiki Level One training weekend on 21st/22nd May 2016 at Health and Harmony.
